The Devannys of Cloonyquin [Gen-020]

Tom Devanny, senior, of Cloonyquin married Bridget Toolan, daughter of William Toolan and Bridget Crohan.

Their children were:

  • Tom, junior
  • Michael, born 1872
  • Catherine ("Kate")
  • William, who inherited the farm of Winifred Toolan (1848-1928).

The children of William Devanny were:

  • Kathleen, who became Mrs. Eamonn Stroker of Curracreigh, near Cloonyquin.
  • Eithne, who became Mrs. John Stroker of Lakeview, Killina, County Roscommon.
  • Sal, unmarried. Lives [1984] in Patrick's Street, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
  • Maureen, (“Moonie") married Jim Leonard. Address (1984): 4, Tivoli Terrace, Tramore, Co. Waterford.
  • Michael, ("Holly") married and now (1984) lives on the Cloonyquin farm.


"Devanny" is also spelled "Devany" and "Devanney".
Similarly, "Cloonyquin" (Ordnance Survey Map spelling) is written in several different ways.

  • Margaret Devaney, Flaska, Co. Roscommon. Died 24th May, 1980. Apparently unmarried. Funeral to Killina Church. Buried in Shankill Cemetery.
  • Michael Patrick Devanney, only son of Thomas and Bridget Devany above. Died 26th January, 1926, aged 13 years. Headstone in Killina (Tulsk) Cemetery.

William Devanney, Clooniguin. Died 1st August, 1949, and his wife Elizabeth Devanney, who died 1st September, 1971.

More Devanneys

There was another family of Devanneys in the Cloonyquin area. They were close relatives of the Devanneys who inherited the Toolan farm in Cloonyquin.

Ita Devanney was a nurse in Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital, Dublin. She married Joe Fitzmaurice of Circular Road, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, a member of the County Council, and had four children - a girl and three boys.

Ita had two sisters, one of whom was also a nurse., One of the sisters was Bridie who became Mrs Connor and lives in Clashmore, Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry. The name of the second sister is not known at present (1984).

The Strokers

Eithne Devanney married John Stroker of Lakeview, Killina.

Their children were

  • Katriona, who went to England in March, 1974 to do nursing.
  • Martin and Josie, who remained on the home farm.
  • Seumas [Editor, 2025: (sic) should be Seamus?] who was in the Irish Army and who died in an explosion on the Border.
  • Ettie (a nurse) married Michael (10-11-1973).
  • ... One other child.
